One of the main barriers to installing solar PV, after cost, is knowing who to trust. We can help.

In 2019 our Solar Streets project gathered interest from over 30 households in installing solar PV. We took this to 12 suppliers and, having got detailed quotes and references from the preferred three, linked up with one to deliver quotes over Winter 2019/20 and installed systems (including PVs and battery storage) in Spring 2020. 

Installing solar PV makes even more sense with rising energy bills – as does more insulation, draught-proofing and better glazing – so we are planning another round of Solar Streets to provide you with information on options, and introduce you to a trusted installer.

We will hold an information evening (online) for you to meet the installer, understand the costs and benefits of solar PV panels, and ask questions. If interested, you can book a survey to get a quote, which will set out the costs and impact on your bills over the next 5-10 years and beyond. Any contract will be between you and the installer, but we’re happy to help with any questions and share lessons learned across the participating households.

Solar Streets is open to residents and businesses of Southwell and the surrounding area – defined broadly by the circulation of the Bramley!

Planning Permission

We have received the following guidance from Newark and Sherwood District Council, who apply the rules set out on Planning Portal.

The installation of solar panels and equipment on residential buildings and land is generally ‘permitted development‘ with no need to apply to the Local Planning Authority for planning permission.

There are some limitations that apply.

For installations mounted on a building

All the following conditions must be observed:

  • Equipment on a building should be sited, so far as is practicable, to minimise the effect on the external appearance of the building and the amenity of the area.
  • When no longer needed equipment should be removed as soon as reasonably practicable.

All the following limits must be met:

  • Panels should not be installed above the highest part of the roof (excluding the chimney) and should project no more than 200mm from the roof slope or wall surface.
  • The panels must not be installed on a building that is within the grounds of a listed building or on a site designated as a scheduled monument.
  • If your property is in a conservation area, or in a World Heritage Site, panels must not be fitted to a wall which fronts a highway.

Note – If you are a leaseholder you may need to get permission from your landlord, freeholder or management company.

For installations not on a building but in the grounds

All the following conditions must be observed:

  • Stand-alone solar equipment should be sited, so far as is practicable, to minimise its effect on the amenity of the area
  • When no longer needed equipment should be removed as soon as reasonably practicable.

All the following limits must be met:

  • Only the first stand alone solar installation will be permitted development. Further installations will require planning permission.
  • No part of the installation should be higher than four metres
  • The installation should be at least 5m from the boundary of the property
  • The size of the array should be no more that 9 square metres or 3m wide by 3m deep
  • Panels should not be installed within boundary of a listed building or a scheduled monument.
  • if your property is in a conservation area, or in a World Heritage Site, no part of the solar installation should be nearer to any highway bounding the house than the part of the house that is nearest to that highway.

Note – If you are a leaseholder you may need to get permission from your landlord, freeholder or management company.

If you have listed buildings then you will need to seek Listed Building Consent, and we were told that consent is likely only to be given for standalone structures.

If anyone is unsure or would like a formal opinion as to whether the work can be undertaken without planning permission, they can apply for a Lawful Development Certificate for Proposed Use or Development. You can apply for this via www.planningportal.co.uk. Please note that a fee will also be required for this service.
