Solar Southwell 2023

“We’re very pleased with our solar panels, and the battery we installed at the same time helps us to make the most of the energy we generate.  It also makes us more conscious about using and saving energy.”

One of the main barriers to installing solar PV, after cost, is knowing who to trust. We can help.

Green Southwell has so far helped over 30 local homeowners install solar PV by providing information and an introduction to a local trusted installer.

Installing solar PV makes even more sense with rising energy bills – as does more insulation, draught-proofing and better glazing – so we are planning another round of Solar Southwell to provide you with information on options, and introduce you to a trusted installer. The challenge at the moment is demand, across the country, which has sadly meant some long waits over the past year. We are therefore going to work with 20 households at a time, and please be aware that while our partner has an ethical and fair-priced supply chain, this is subject to those market pressures.

We will hold an information evening (online) for you to meet the installer, understand the costs and benefits of solar PV panels, and ask questions. If interested, the next stage is for you to complete a questionnaire about your home to assess it’s likely suitability.

You can then book a survey to get a quote, which will set out the costs and impact on your bills over the next 5-10 years and beyond. Any contract will be between you and the installer, but we’re happy to help with any questions and share lessons learned across the participating households.

Solar Southwell is open to residents and businesses of Southwell and the surrounding area – defined broadly by the circulation of the Bramley!

Planning Permission

Our planning advice from Newark and Sherwood District Council

The installation of solar panels and equipment on residential buildings and land is generally ‘permitted development‘ with no need to apply to the Local Planning Authority for planning permission.

However, if your property is in a conservation area, panels must not be fitted to a wall which fronts a highway. Property-owners also have permitted development rights to install one standalone structure such as a pergola or carport, subject to certain restrictions, which can be read here. If you have listed buildings then you will need to seek Listed Building Consent, and we were told that consent was only likely for standalone structures.
